Paan Maker
A popular custom in Bangladesh (but also in other countries in Asia) is the chewing of paan, a mixture of areca nut and betel leaf. Almost every street has its paan maker who cuts the areca nuts in thin slices and wraps it together with a betel leave.
It has a stimulating effect which is most probably responsible for its widespread use. But it also has a traditional background where it is consumed as part of celebrations. However, studies indicate negative side effects like gum issues, tooth decay and even oral cancer.
