Debating Monks
Each day in the afternoon the monks of the Sera Monastery in Lhasa go to the central courtyard to debate. They split up in groups of two to four with one monk - the questioner - standing up, moving back and forth towards the listening defender(s). He sweeps and claps his hands in the direction of his opponents, "throwing" his counter arguments at them. Sometimes the debates become very passionate and intense and it may look like the monks are caught up in a heavy quarrel. But after two hours it all comes to an end peacefully
